Our first destination is Antwerp, an enjoyable town and the world's most important
diamond cutting centre.
We stop at the Grote Markt, an irregular square with beautiful guild-halls from
the 16th and 17th centuries. The 15th century Town Hall is a successful combination of
Flemish architecture and Italian renaissance features.
Antwerp's most famous son is undoubtedly the Flemish master painter Pieter Paul Rubens.
His works can be seen in numerous churches and museums, as well as in the nicely
restored Rockoxhuis (alongside Jordaens, Matsys and Van Dyck). The Rubenshuis on the
Wapper, where the painter lived and worked, still breathes the grandeur from the heyday
of Antwerp baroque.
