It has taken almost 40 years to complete the enormous and prestigious Delta Project. In 1958 - 5 years after the catastrophic flood that took the lives of 1835 people, left more than 500,000 others homeless and wasted over 260,000 hectares (abt. 640,000 acres) of land - the Dutch started to construct a network of barriers, dikes, dams and locks, closing off the estuaries in the south-west.

Crown piece of the project is the storm surge barrier in the Oosterschelde (picture above), which is over 3,200 meters long and is built upon piers between which steel gates are suspended. This project, unique in the world, is a must-see for people interested in water control. It is located in the province of Zeeland, famous for its coastline, river delta and beautiful waterlines.

At Waterland Neeltje-Jans, an exhibition explains the complete history of the Delta Project, richly illustrated by means of film and miniatures.
